Adaptaions, Parenthesis and other stories.

17 01 2009

Well since I last wrote about the story I’ve decided to write, I have in admission written…well, very little in fact. I’m still very much thinking about it however. You see I originally indented to write it just to see if I could get a novels worth out of it and if it was any good see if I could maybe do something with it. Yadda, yadda, yadda, see the original novel post for the full story. But my motives have now morphed into something much more than that. I now intend for it to be a film. But surely you’re going about this all wrong? I hear you cry. Surely Stu if you want it to be a film you should write it as a script?

That’s a very good question…erm…. Me. I’m glad I asked me. :|

Well you see I have for sometime as been hatching my evil plan for when I graduate. That plan does involve me getting some kind of well paid film related job (preferably some kind of editor (preferably in film (and preferably using final cut.))) (too much parenthesis I know, but hey I’m quirky like that) (just look at this for example more parenthesis and used incorrectly too) {I wonder what these Parenthesis are for? they look like Baterangs} {Ha spellcheck doesn’t recognise Baterang} {Ha ironically neither does it recognise spellcheck} {you should have seen how I spelt parenthesis before the spellcheck got a hold of that, phew!} [These ones are boring] [Too rigid] (Ok so that’s defiantly the worst digressing I’ve ever done) (although if you think this is bad you should see my facebook about me section) Gah, damn it I’ve done it again)

Ok so graduation, film type editing job. Then in my spare time I want to make a feature film using all the resources and people at my disposal when back in Birmingham. However I couldn’t think of a good idea for a film that necessitated a feature, I only had a style I wanted it to be like. But then I thought wait a minute I’ve got this whole novel idea planned out in my head. Novels normally get turned into feature films. DING! Light bulb moment, et viola film planning can commence.

That’s all great, I say to myself again. But that still doesn’t explain why you’re still writing a story for film like a book.

I know it doesn’t, but if I just hold my horses then I’ll tell me, I was getting to that.. But of course I already knew that because I am you and you are me. Not you, as in the you that’s reading this, unless it’s me reading it back again then in that case then yes you. But I mean not you as in someone who isn’t me… so you.

Great now my brain hurts.

So yes the reason I am writing it as a book is because I have harboured this belief for some time now that if I write a story in prose form first then re write it as a script I’ll have a much better script all round.  I think I’d have a better understanding of character and setting. There would be things that wouldn’t go into the script but I would know when writing, which should make for a much better script and film all round.

I was going to write a chapter/scene tonight but I realised I need to do some research before I can, mainly to make sure the details are correct. It’s a police interview and I need to get all the protocol right. It is actually based on a police interview that I once had. Thing is it was a long time ago and I can’t really remember all the finer points. But the way in which the interview is conducted will be very similar to the one I had.

I am excited about this though. If it all comes off and is as good as I see in my head then it could go somewhere who knows. Dv film is becoming less of a amateur format and more acceptable nowadays. David Lynch shothe three hour Inland Empire on dv and look at 28 Days Later all dv and it looks great. If you can get your hands on a 35mm adapter for a dv cam than you can make your footage look very film like indeed. Of course that’s not the be all and end all, shot composition  and lighting play a big part too. But I do think it’s possible one thing I know is it’s going to be a big part of my life for a long time possibly a few years I’m going to have to spend a lot of time and money and call in a lot of favours from a lot of friends.

But hey, this is what I want to do. And if you can do it with no money and no crew then imagine what you can do with money and crew.

Until the next progress update.

Oh and on the off chance that someone still reads this blog and wants to help with the film, be in the film, donate to the film. Hell anything at all, even if you’re not in Birmingham. Just leave a comment or email me at stuartalmond@gmail.com. I’m going to need all the help I can get.
